Reason
Businesses that make you feel valued and support you on shifts are a big reason why I go back.

Why did you start working for Upshift?
I found Upshift in 2019 when I was looking for jobs online. I was looking for a flexible job that offered part time to full time hours which allowed me to spend more time on my hobbies. I needed to be able to change my schedule based on the projects that I was working on and there aren’t many jobs where you can do that.
What do you do outside of Upshift?
When I’m not working, I like to go to comic conventions around the Midwest. As a kid, I was a big Star Wars fan and always wanted to be able to make the costumes and armor from the movies. I started doing this when I was in my teens and have continued doing it until today. Right now, I’ve been focusing on making Star Wars Mandolorian armor out of metal. It can be challenging but there are always things you can learn to make each version better.

Do you have any advice for new Upshifters?
Always make sure to ask the people around you if you have questions about certain tasks. You shouldn’t feel intimidated as the managers and staff are always willing to help. Making sure you understand what to do and how to do it correctly will make the shifts a lot more enjoyable and set you up for success.
What have been your favorite shifts so far?
I started off working a lot of shifts at Takeya USA. I’ve worked a variety of positions from kitchen steward, dishwasher, banquet server among others. Some of my favorite places I’ve worked at recently have been the Grand Event Center, New Albany Country Club, Nationwide Hotel and Brewdog. Businesses that make you feel valued and support you on shifts are a big reason why I go back. The other nice thing about hospitality shifts is many times they offer a meal. Eating some roast chicken after a shift definitely beats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
