Meet our newest Upshifter of the Week, Joe D. - He utilizes Upshift to find flexible work whenever he is not seeing plays and concerts with his daughter.
Why did you start working for Upshift?
I’m a teacher and they cancelled Summer school in 2022 so I wasn’t sure what I would do with my time off. I was chatting with one of my colleagues who had recently signed up and started working shifts on Upshift. He told me how great it was to have the flexibility to pick up shifts when school is out. I signed up for Upshift that Summer and have been picking up shifts during school breaks ever since.
What do you do outside of Upshift?
I’m a single parent so my life outside of work revolves around my daughter. She’s a senior so she’ll be heading off to college next year so we’re getting ready for that. We love to do different things around Charlotte including seeing different concerts and plays that come to town. We have a subscription to the Art Center so we go to 1 play per month. We’ve seen some great plays and concerts this year like Hamilton and Billy Joel.
“I’m a teacher and Upshift’s flexibility was exactly what I was looking for on school breaks.”
Do you have any advice for new Upshifters?
I would recommend finding a few locations that you like to work at. I’ve been lucky enough to find something that’s both convenient for me travel wise and scheduling wise. I only found it by trying out shifts at a few different places before deciding where I wanted to focus most of my attention. If you can find that place and be successful there, you’ll always have a location that you can go back to in the future when you’re looking to pick up shifts.
What have been your favorite shifts so far?
I’ve worked most of my shifts at the Ballantyne Hotel. It’s really convenient for me based on where I live, which is why I originally started picking up shifts there. They’ve been really great about working with me on my schedule because I obviously can’t pick up shifts while school is open. I’ve been working as a Steward there which has been a really easy transition because I was previously a food and beverage manager so I’m very familiar with the hospitality industry.
