It was really exciting and I also learned a ton of new skills along the way.
Why did you start working for Upshift?
I signed up for Upshift in 2020 but didn’t work my first shift until September, 2021. I wasn’t able to work during the pandemic so Upshift was my first step back into the workforce. I was really lucky to have had Upshift at that time as it became my primary income source.
What do you do outside of Upshift?
I like to spend my time off roller skating and collecting vinyl records. I’ve been collecting records for a long time. Once you find your favorite artists or genre, it becomes a lot more fun. I’m a Motown girl and mostly focus on R&B and Soul artists. I don’t know the exact amount of records that I’ve collected but it’s way over 100

Do you have any advice for new Upshifters?
You never know where a shift might lead you so make sure to work hard and make a good impression. If you can do that, the businesses will want you to come back and work future shifts there. That one shift may open the door to a variety of options that you didn’t know existed.
What have been your favorite shifts so far?
I started at UNCC and have worked a variety of positions there including prep cook and line cook. I’ve also worked at Queens University, Charlotte City Club, Spectrum Center and a few others. Upshift allowed me to experience different venues in Charlotte that I had never been to before or even knew existed. It was really exciting and I also learned a ton of new skills along the way.
